About Bioscience

Cancer, Alzheimer's and malaria: these are just some of the diseases that are being studied within our biosciences research domain. The "blue sky" research conducted provides the basic knowledge that underpins the development of pharmaceutical and clinical applications for the treatment of disease and for the maintenance of good health. Researchers within the biosciences research domain seek to understand the function and responses of cells in biological systems, conducting research within the following areas:

  • Genetics and heredity: The study of genes in organisms that determine cell morphology and function and how these genes are passed from one generation to the next to influence health and disease;
  • Molecular biology and biochemistry: The use of techniques to create genetic constructs to study the function of genes and molecules in cells. The study of signaling pathways that govern cells' responses to signals in their environment;
  • Pharmacology and physiology: How drugs and internal or external stimuli can impact on cellular responses;
  • Anatomy and morphology;
  • Cell biology: the study of cell morphology and function.

Researchers within our departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, Physiology and Dental Science are heavily represented in this domain, which spans many disciplines.
