Overview

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences is Australia's premier biomedical research faculty, attracting more national peer-reviewed medical research funding than any other medical and health sciences faculty in the country. It attracts half of all research funds gained by the University of Melbourne, Australia's top-funded university for educational and research programs. Best funded areas

With an overall research income in 2004 of more than $90 million, the faculty is renowned for the breadth and depth of its research in areas ranging from medical education and medical history to biotechnology and genetics.

Several areas have emerged in the last five years as particular strengths with international recognition and substantial external funding supporting them. These are the neurosciences, microbiology and immunology and cancer.

Faculty Research Development Unit

The faculty's Associate Deans, Professor Jim McCluskey (Research), Associate Professor Arthur Shulkes (Research training) and Professor Eric Reynolds (Commercialisation) lead the development of the faculty's research, research training and commercialisation profiles. The unit:

  • supports the faculty dean and associate deans (research, research training and commercialisation) in strategic and operational planning for research including:
    • broadening the faculty's funding base for research;
    • monitoring changes in government policy on medical research;
    • evaluating the faculty's performance in research and research training.
  • administers submissions for grants and schemes e.g. major equipment schemes, Melbourne Early Career Researcher Grant Scheme;
  • works with affiliated research institutes to strengthen faculty–institute links;
  • administers faculty scholarships and fellowships;
  • provides a mentoring service for researchers;
  • communicates research and funding opportunities to faculty members;
  • provides administrative support for faculty research committees;
  • liaises with the Melbourne Research Office to promote and administer research;
  • raises the profile of faculty research to industry and the wider community.
