Congratulations to the winners of Under the Coverslip, an annual photographic competition for the postgraduate students at the University of Melbourne. And the winners are:
1st Prize: 'Pick-up sticks' Andrea Watt
Raphide bundles of calcium oxalate spilling from crystal
idioblasts within the primordial bract tissue of a Sauvignon Blanc latent bud.

2nd Prize: 'Where's Wally' Stefan Gehrig
Laminin staining to reveal muscle fibre outline (Alexa Fluro 488),
DAPI staining to show nuclei. Smad2 (red) fluorescence is also shown.

3rd Prize: 'Shattered' Kyatt Dixon
Sample from the ancient seaweed group, the red algae, stained with
aniline blue to reveal cellular details, it could not be identified
from the currently recognised species and is probably new to science.
The title alludes to the unique pattern exhibited by the lateral
branches, somewhat similar to the fracturing of ice crystals.

The competetion is an opportunity for students to display their outstanding micrographs taken through the course of their research studies, displayed in an artistic manner. The contestants come from many different aspects of science and medical research.
The winners were announced by the Dean, James Angus, at a special opening night event on Monday 3 November. The winners were chosen by a judging panel including academic staff from the Department of Anatomy, Bio21, and the Art History co-ordinator of the University.The exhibition is free and open to the public and runs until Wednesday 5 November.
