About KT

Knowledge transfer at the University

Knowledge transfer (KT) is the two-way flow and uptake of ideas between the University of Melbourne and the broader community. It is the third strand of the University’s Growing Esteem strategy, and is underpinned by three principles.

Knowledge transfer:

  • creates intellectual capital in ways that mutually benefit the University and its external partners
  • is linked to the University’s teaching and research activities
  • responds to global, social, economic, environmental and cultural issues.

Knowledge transfer at the faculty

A key element to the success of Knowledge Transfer within the faculty is the ability to facilitate relationship building between faculty staff and those external to the faculty. Relationship building is essential to all the different approaches to knowledge transfer.

Relationship building is improved when there are opportunities for faculty staff and external stakeholders to meet, share, debate, discuss and engage with each other. Creating platforms for relationship building is central to knowledge transfer in the faculty, as it is these platforms where new collaborations can be born. Central to relationship building is the effective communication between the University and its external audiences.

This website will deliver a suite of innovative functionalities that will enable relationship building and effective communication. This includes desktop video conferencing, a podcasting portal, a relationship building space and shared work environments.

There are four guiding principles to knowledge transfer in the faculty:

  1. The faculty knowledge transfer strategy is consistent with the broad objectives of the University knowledge transfer strategy
  2. The faculty should promote, facilitate and sustain a “healthy system” approach to KT across the faculty
  3. The faculty will facilitate the establishment of platforms for dialogue between research users and research producers across the Faculty
  4. The facilitation of KT should be encouraged in the work practices of all staff in the faculty.
