2010 Faculty Research Scholarships - how to apply

Applications for 2010 Faculty Research Scholarships have closed-the following information will assist with applying for a Faculty Research Scholarship in 2011

Faculty research scholarships (FRS) are offered each year to eligible high calibre local and international students who have not qualified for an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), Melbourne Research Scholarship (MRS) or Melbourne International Research Scholarship (MIRS). FRS assist students to begin their program of studies and to help them qualify for other major scholarships in the following year.

Note that in addition to FRS, some trust-fund scholarships are for more than one year or are awarded by specific departments and require specific application forms.

Eligibility criteria for FRS and discipline and department-specific scholarships

To be considered for FRS and discipline and department-specific scholarships, applicants must have completed at least four years of tertiary education studies at a high level of achievement. For example:

  • a four-year degree
  • a three-year degree and an honours year
  • a three-year degree and one year of a masters preliminary or other qualifying program
  • a three-year degree and a postgraduate diploma

Applicants must have achieved a minimum of second class honours (or equivalent).

Important information regarding citizenship for FRS and discipline and department-specific scholarship applicants

Step 1: identify whether you are applying as a local or an international student

If you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident or you are a New Zealand citizen, you are defined as a Local Student.

All other students are considered International Students (this includes permanent residents of New Zealand).

Step 2: ensure you follow the application instructions relevant for your citizenship status

Note that International applicants need to choose between two different procedures so please read the definitions carefully.

Step 3: please note

You can only be considered for a FRS if you have received an unconditional course offer for entry into a research higher degree. (Note that receipt of an unconditional course offer includes meeting the University's English language requirements).

Application instructions for FRS

Local Students

Step 1: Local students wishing to apply for FRS must apply for a University of Melbourne scholarship via University's online Scholarships Application System - SCHOLS - and complete an application for an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) and/or Melbourne Research Scholarship (MRS).

Step 2: In addition, to ensure your interest in being considered is registered you must also complete the Faculty's online Faculty Research Scholarships form (please note: applications for FRS for 2010 have now closed).

Applicants for APA and MRS who are unsuccessful for these scholarships and who have completed the online Faculty Research Scholarships application form will be automatically considered for FRS.

International Students

As a result of the conditions attached to some bequests that fund faculty research scholarships, not all FRS may be open to international students. Please check individual scholarships for eligibility requirements by reviewing the list of faculty research scholarships.

Identify which type of International student you are:

  • I am an international student, already enrolled in the degree for which I would like support and I am seeking a scholarship for 2010.

Step 1: If you fall into this category and you wish to apply for FRS you must apply for a 2011 Melbourne International Research Scholarship (MIRS) via the University's online Scholarships Application System - SCHOLS - by 31 October 2010 (please note: applications for FRS for 2010 have now closed).

Step 2: In addition, to ensure your interest in being considered is registered you must also complete the Faculty's online Faculty Research Scholarships application form by 31 October 2010 (please note: applications for FRS for 2010 have now closed).

Applicants for MIRS who are unsuccessful and who have completed the online Faculty Research Scholarships application form by 31 October 2010 will be automatically considered for FRS (please note: applications for FRS for 2010 have now closed).

Step 1: So long as you receive an unconditional offer and have been scored by your department prior to the deliberations of the University's Graduate Research Scholarships Committee, you will be considered for MIRS. Applicants for MIRS who are unsuccessful are eligible for consideration for FRS for which international students are eligible.

Step 2: In addition, to ensure your interest in being considered is registered you must also complete the Faculty's online Faculty Research Scholarships application form by 31 October 2010 (please note: applications for FRS for 2010 have now closed).

Applicants are advised that the assessment process for entry to a research degree may take up to six weeks and in some cases longer. It is therefore unlikely that applications received on or just prior to 31 October can be assessed in time for the major scholarship scoring rounds in 2010.

Step 1: If you receive an unconditional offer for your degree course and have been scored by your department prior to the deliberations of the University's Graduate Research Scholarships Committee, you will be considered for MIRS.

If conditions are placed on your offer for the degree course then until the conditions are met the University's Graduate Research Scholarships Committee cannot score you for scholarship and for this reason you will not be eligible to be considered for FRS for 2011. Please note that when conditions have been met, your application will be considered for any scholarships remaining for 2011. Please refer to the Graduate Research Scholarships website of the University for more information.
