University research higher degree scholarships

Applications are now open for University research higher degree scholarships.

The University of Melbourne offers a large range of scholarships to assist high calibre local and international research higher degree students. Local students can apply for Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) and Melbourne Research Scholarships (MRS). International students can apply for the Melbourne International Research Scholarships (MIRS) and tuition fee remission via International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) and Melbourne International Fee Remission Scholarships (MIFRS). Faculty research scholarships

As a result of generous donations and bequests, the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences is able to offer local and international students funding for study leading to a research masters, DMedSc or PhD across a range of biomedical and health science related areas. Faculty Research Scholarships give recipients an opportunity to qualify for major university administered scholarships such as Melbourne Research Scholarships (MRS) and Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) for local students and Melbourne International Research Scholarships (MIRS) for international students. In addition to 12 month Faculty Research Scholarships, the faculty also offers a number of department specific and prestigious scholarships such as the Melville Hughes Scholarship and Elizabeth and Vernon Puzey Scholarship.

Other graduate scholarships

Bursaries for Indigenous Australians

Postgraduate capacity building research bursaries are available to Indigenous Australians who wish to undertake certificate, postgraduate diploma, masters or PhD studies. Preference will be given to applicants with the intention and potential to undertake research. Find out more

Health workforce PhD scholarships

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne and the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Queensland are currently engaged in a collaborative initiative in the area of health workforce research. As part of this initiative, applications are invited for two PhD scholarships. The successful applicants will conduct research in areas such as health workforce planning, education and training design and policy development. International students

The university offers a range of scholarships to international students applying for postgraduate research study at the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. For more information on these scholarships and instructions on how to apply, visit the Melbourne Scholarships Office website.

The Australian Government's Australian Scholarships program provides a large variety of generous scholarships for both local and international students to undertake studies and research in Australia and overseas. The scholarships support short visits and completion of entire courses.

The program includes the Endeavour Awards and the AusAID Australian Leadership Awards (ALAs). The ALAs are for citizens from the Asia Pacific region to undertake doctorate or masters courses in Australia.

The National Health and Medical Research Council offers a range of research scholarships in the health science fields.

Travel and conference funding 

Funding for research related travel and to attend conferences is not provided through the faculty but is generally made available through your enrolling department. The Melbourne Scholarships Office website has information on University administered travel funding opportunities. Students are requested to discuss their research needs with their supervisor who can advise if funding may be available and/or appropriate. (Students based at Medical Research Institutions are advised to approach their institution in the first instance).
