Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences

Environment, Health and Safety

Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) management is the practice of reducing risk in the workplace by ensuring a safe working environment. This is achieved by having good safe work procedures, providing appropriate induction and training for staff and students, and regularly inspecting the workplace for hazards.

The faculty EHS program is developed and managed by the Faculty EHS Manager (see Contact information below) through the Faculty EHS Committee. Each department, school or centre within the faculty will have it's own local EHS committee that reports back to the Faculty EHS Committee.

Resources

Useful information on workplace, laboratory and off campus safety has been developed to assist staff, students and supervisors within the faculty to understand the requirements of a safe workplace:

  • Safety in the laboratory: procedures and risk assessments to ensure a safe working environment in the laboratory.
  • Safety in the workplace: procedures for checking workplace safety requirements in local areas.
  • Safety off campus: information for supervisors of students to provide safe work guidelines for placements and travel.
  • Managing environment, health and safety: an overview for managers and supervisors, responsible for ensuring that EHS standards and requirements are met locally.
  • Incident reporting: procedures for reporting incidents that result in injury or near-injury at the university.
  • Training: EHS training needs analysis, courses and advice.
  • Purchasing: advice and guidelines for purchasing EHS compliant goods and services.
  • Induction considerations: staff and student EHS induction guidelines.
  • Environmental management: aims, best practice examples and information about Sustainability at the University.
  • Inspections: checklists for conduction EHS inspections of workplaces, laboratories, offices and workshops.
  • University EHS manual: quick access to frequently used sections.
  • Useful links: to websites which contain EHS related information.

The university's EHS management system is overseen by the EHS unit. The system is regularly audited in order to comply with two separate standards (SafetyMAP and AS/NZS ISO 14001).

Every faculty is also separately responsible for managing their own local activities in accordance with the safe work policies set out in the Environment, Health and Safety Manual. To achieve this, the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences has developed it's own EHS program (as outlined in this website).
