As a result of generous donations and bequests, the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and health Sciences is able to offer students funding for study leading to a research masters, MD, PhD or a higher doctorate across a range of biomedical and health sciences related areas.

Faculty one-year research higher degree scholarships

Each year the faculty offers one-year postgraduate scholarships to assist research higher degree students begin their program of studies and qualify for major scholarships such as Melbourne Research Scholarships (MRS), Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA). It is therefore usual for students who receive these one-year stipends to have concurrent applications to other awards. These interim funds are available to students undertaking research in a range of biomedical and health sciences related areas.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the one-year research higher degree scholarships, applicants must have completed at least four years of tertiary education studies at a high level of achievement. For example:

  • a four-year degree;
  • a three-year degree and an honours year;
  • a three-year degree and one year of a masters preliminary or other qualifying program; or
  • a three-year degree and a postgraduate diploma

Applicants must have achieved a minimum of second class honours (or equivalent).

Prestigious scholarships

Elisabeth and Vernon Puzey Postgraduate Research Scholarship

This scholarship is open to graduates undertaking research in a school/department of the faculty or at approved institutions. View information about the Elisabeth and Vernon Puzey Postgraduate Research Scholarship.

Melville Hughes Scholarship

This scholarship is open to medical graduates to undertake research in respect of furthering surgical studies. In accordance with the scholarship trust, applicants must have been born in Victoria or be of Victorian-born parents. view information about the Melville Hughes Scholarship.

Postgraduate capacity building research bursaries for Indigenous Australians

These bursaries will be available to students of Indigenous Australian descent who wish to undertake certificate, postgraduate diploma, masters or PhD studies in 2008. Preference will be given to applicants with the intention and potential to undertake research. View the faculty's scholarship and access information for Indigenous students.

    NOTE: Funding to attend conferences is not provided through the faculty but is generally made available through your enrolling department. Students are requested to discuss their research needs with their supervisor who can advise if funding may be available and/or appropriate. (Students based at Medical Research Institutions are advised to approach their institution in the first instance).
