Postgraduate research programsResearch mastersA research masters degree usually takes up to two years of full-time study. Many research masters degrees can be taken part time. Masters degree students can sometimes convert to PhD candidature after a specified period of their masters degree. Such a transfer follows evidence of satisfactory progress and the agreement of supervisors. The transfer is administered by the School of Graduate Studies. The Master of Science degree is administered by the School of Graduate Studies and candidates undertaking research in the broad range of biomedical sciences conduct their projects within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. PhD programsThe PhD program is usually based on a three-year research degree incorporating a thesis of 80,000 to 100,000 words. Students in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences are supervised by either two supervisors or one supervisor and a supervisory committee. The faculty has more than 800 PhD students. Students are located in the faculty's schools, departments and centres or in one of the faculty's affiliated research organisations. The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences offers research opportunities across a broad range of areas from medical education and the history of medicine, through to biotechnology and genetics. MD programsThe MD degree program is based on a two-year full-time or four to five-year part-time supervised research program. Candidates must hold an approved medical degree or recognised equivalent of at least two years' standing and have the approval of the faculty for admission to the program.
