Prospective research students: how to apply for a PhD

The faculty welcomes applications from international and local students to study for a higher degree by research in one of the faculty's schools or departments. Candidates must:

  • meet the entrance requirements for a PhD. This is usually an honours degree or masters degree in a relevant area. Specific requirements can be obtained from the potential supervisor or supervising school or department.
  • decide on an area of interest by viewing the list of research areas;
  • locate and communicate with a potential supervisor - an academic staff member - in the preferred field of research. The staff member must agree to supervise the candidate.
  • apply formally for admission to the university as a student. Visit the School of Graduate Studies site for more information.
  • wait for formal acknowledgement of the receipt of your application. The entire application process can take up to 12 weeks. A formal letter of offer or rejection will be sent to you.
  • consider applying for a University or Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences' scholarship. Find out more about postgraduate scholarships.
