The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences is Australia's premier biomedical research faculty. Biomedicine at the University of Melbourne has been ranked no. 1 in Australia and no. 7 in the world in the Times Higher Education Supplement rankings of universities, published in October 2006. Prestige and tradition

The faculty's prestige is founded on its outstanding record in teaching and research. Our alumni include two Nobel Laureates, both graduates of the medical school. Macfarlane Burnet (MBBS, Melb. 1922) received the Nobel Prize in 1960 and John Eccles (MBBS, Melb. 1925) was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1963. The faculty's history dates back to the establishment of the School of Medicine in 1862. It is the oldest and one of the most prestigious medical schools in Australia.
